Renegades by Sara Mason – Review

;Blurb:

Elora Pertin spent her life trying to please her father, an esteemed General for the Empire.

When he convinced her to leave her quiet life as a scientist to advance a secret project for the Emperor, she had no idea what she was getting into. The seemingly innocent projects she engineered were actually being used to develop a genocidal weapon. After uncovering the Emperor’s plot, Elora had no choice but to act.

Elora finds herself fighting for her life against the Empire she once served, abandoning everything with only a handful of friends and an unlikely ally—the Emperor’s deadliest assassin. Will he prove himself true as her protector, a loyal servant of the Empire, or a romantic distraction? With the law and assassins searching the star system for them, Elora and her team are determined to accomplish their mission . . . or die trying.

My Review:

Renegades surprised me; I went into the book thinking that I would have a hard time of this story, it being a sci-fi. The blurb gives enough away to make it seem like a space-political-thriller, but the book did not come off like that at all. Mordecai was not the soulless assassin that he was portrayed, but neither is he all hearts and fuzzies on the inside. It’s a pure coincidence that Elora is not shipped off to the afterlife on meeting him, and a string of other consequences as well.

But you do have to feel sorry for Nigel. No matter what the poor boy does, he just isn’t getting the girl.  That would be the job of Mr Tall-Dark-and-Hansom. Bylis and Zor are fun, but know when to be serious. Though, admittedly, I think their story would have been a much better kicker.

Spelling and Grammar aside, this is a delightful romp of a book, spanning all the known galaxies – and even a couple of unknown planets as well.

Yoland “Kitten” Sleek is used to living in a world of secrets. Born a mixed breed of humanoid, one engineered to kill and another made for pleasure, she explores the galaxy searching for the one source that can protect the privacy of her family: her father. Special Operations Sergeant Brinks “Watch” Dog leads his squadron into the most challenging of planetary environments in service to the Compound Operations Research Exploration (CORE) Unit of the United Human Alliance. Bound to his Squad Leader, Jeremy “Sanction” Weaver, they scour the galaxies hunting to fulfill the missions of the CORE and save a planet’s people. After the rare addition of female Enlist Yoland Sleek to the team, the secrecy surrounding her threatens the squadron’s existence.

Can they keep their minds focused on the mission, or should their attentions deviate to the temptation of Yoland Sleek?

My Review:

Oh. My. God. The start of this book showed little promise, but there was something dragging me on. It wasn’t until I looked down and realised I was 83% of the way through the book that I understood.

This book is freaking hot.

The sex, the drama, the intrigue, the universe all collate together to create a story that’s so addictive, I stayed up too late reading for three days straight, hooked on the question of what would happen next.

In my opinion, the sequel can’t come fast enough!
